Day-by-day itinerary
Arrive Cairns · Evening on the Esplanade — Our representative meets you at Cairns Airport after immigration, customs and the biosecurity check, and drives you to your hotel, about 15 minutes. Flights from India usually connect through Singapore or an Australian city. Standard check-in is from 2:00–3:00 pm. In the evening, walk along the Cairns Esplanade, with its free swimming lagoon, boardwalk and night market. Dinner is included.
Outer Great Barrier Reef full-day cruise — An early breakfast, then a transfer to the Reef Fleet Terminal for check-in around 7:30–8:00 am. The boat takes about 1.5–2 hours to reach the outer reef, where you spend about 4–5 hours. Snorkelling equipment is provided, and non-swimmers can use a life jacket and flotation noodle, or see the coral and fish from a glass-bottom boat or semi-submarine. Cruise operators usually serve a buffet…
Daintree Rainforest · Mossman Gorge · Daintree River cruise — A full day of about 10–11 hours. After breakfast, drive north along the coast road past Port Douglas, about 1.5 hours, to Mossman Gorge for a short, easy rainforest walk along the river. Continue to the Daintree River for a 1-hour cruise to spot saltwater crocodiles, birds and mangroves, then cross on the cable ferry into the Daintree Rainforest for boardwalk walks and a stop at Cape…
Green Island half-day trip — After breakfast, take the fast catamaran from the Reef Fleet Terminal to Green Island, about 45–50 minutes. The island is a small coral cay ringed by reef and beach, with a short rainforest boardwalk around it. You can snorkel straight off the beach (equipment provided) or take the glass-bottom boat tour, which is good for children and seniors. Return to Cairns by early afternoon; lunch is on…
Free day · Optional Kuranda or a dive day — A free day after breakfast. Optional at extra cost: a day trip to the rainforest village of Kuranda, up on the Kuranda Scenic Railway and back down over the treetops on the Skyrail cableway, about 7–8 hours in all; or a second reef day with dives for certified divers. Otherwise, relax at the Esplanade lagoon or visit the Cairns Aquarium.
Departure from Cairns — Breakfast and check-out, usually by 10:00–11:00 am. Transfer to Cairns Airport, about 15 minutes, reaching about 3 hours before an international flight or 1.5–2 hours before a domestic connection. Do not fly within 24 hours of scuba diving; this trip keeps your last reef day well before departure.

Visa & entry
Indian passport holders need an Australian Visitor visa (subclass 600, Tourist stream) before travel. VK Tours lodges Australian visitor visas for clients through our own ImmiAccount as your registered agent: we prepare the application, check your documents and track it until a decision. You will usually need a passport valid for the whole trip (we recommend 6 months), 6 months of bank statements, income tax returns, a leave letter from your employer or proof of your business, and the trip itinerary. Processing often takes 3–6 weeks for a complete application but can be longer, so apply at least 8–10 weeks before travel and do not buy non-refundable flights until the visa is granted. You may be asked to give biometrics (photo and fingerprints) at a VFS Global centre. The visa fee is set by the Australian government and usually changes each July; we confirm it when you apply.
Good to know
From about November to May, box jellyfish and Irukandji may be in the water. Reef operators provide full-body lycra 'stinger suits'; wear them, and swim only in the Esplanade lagoon or netted areas on the mainland.
Do not swim in rivers or creeks: saltwater crocodiles live there. Follow all warning signs.
The reef boat can be rough on windy days. Take seasickness tablets about an hour before boarding; the crew can also give you some.
Scuba diving needs a medical declaration, and some conditions (asthma, heart problems, recent surgery) need a doctor's clearance. Do not fly within 24 hours of diving.
Australia has strict biosecurity rules. Declare all food on your arrival card, including pickles, spices and sweets.
Cairns is warm and humid all year (about 23–31°C). Pack light cotton clothes, reef-safe sunscreen, a hat and insect repellent for the rainforest.
Questions travellers ask
We can't swim. Is this trip still worth it?
Yes. You can snorkel with a life jacket and flotation noodle, and staff watch from the platform. You can also see the reef from the glass-bottom boat or semi-submarine on the outer reef and at Green Island without getting wet.
Is scuba diving included?
No. Snorkelling is included. An introductory scuba dive with an instructor, which needs no certificate, can be added on the outer reef day at extra cost.
Can VK Tours apply for our Australian visa?
Yes. We lodge Australian visitor visas (subclass 600) for our clients through our own ImmiAccount, prepare and file the application, and keep you updated.
Is vegetarian food available?
Yes. Dinners are included daily, and Cairns has several Indian restaurants. The reef cruise buffet usually has vegetarian dishes; tell us in advance and we will inform the operator.
How do we get to Cairns from India?
There are no direct flights. Most routes connect through Singapore, or through Sydney, Melbourne or Brisbane. We can quote flights from Hyderabad, Chennai or Bengaluru with the package.
