Visa & entry
This trip covers two countries and you need permission for both. Azerbaijan: Indian passport holders need an e-visa before travel, applied for online at evisa.gov.az; the standard visa costs about USD 25, takes about 3 working days and allows a single entry of up to 30 days. Georgia: Indian passport holders need a Georgian e-visa, applied for online at evisa.gov.ge, which costs about USD 20 plus service and identity-check fees and usually takes 5–7 working days. You do not need a Georgian visa if you hold a valid visa or residence permit of the USA, UK, a Schengen country or certain other countries; check with us. Since 1 January 2026 Georgia requires every visitor to carry health and accident insurance covering at least GEL 30,000 for the whole stay. Your passport must be valid for at least 6 months, with blank pages for both countries.
Good to know
Azerbaijan's land borders remain closed for entry, but visitors are currently allowed to leave by land into Georgia, which is why the trip runs from Baku to Tbilisi and not the other way. We recheck the border rules before your departure.
At the Balakan–Lagodekhi border you walk a short stretch with your luggage. Pack in wheeled bags and keep passports, printed e-visas and insurance papers in your hand luggage.
Georgian food has good vegetarian dishes: khachapuri (cheese bread), lobio (bean stew), badrijani (aubergine with walnut paste) and pkhali (vegetable and walnut pâté). Tbilisi also has several Indian restaurants.
Two currencies: the Azerbaijani manat (AZN) and the Georgian lari (GEL). Cards work in both capitals; carry some cash for Sheki, Sighnaghi and the border.
Churches in Georgia expect covered shoulders and knees, and women cover their heads; scarves and wrap skirts are usually lent at the door.
Sheki and Kakheti are cooler than Baku. Carry a warm layer, and full winter clothing from December to February.
Questions travellers ask
Do we need two visas?
Yes, an e-visa for Azerbaijan and an e-visa for Georgia, both applied for online. If you already hold a valid US, UK or Schengen visa, you may not need the Georgian visa. Send us your passport details and we will check and apply for you.
Why do we fly into Baku and out of Tbilisi?
Azerbaijan currently lets visitors leave by land but not enter by land, so the road journey only works in this direction. It also saves a day of backtracking.
Is the border crossing difficult for elderly travellers?
It is a short walk on flat ground between the two posts, with a wait for passport checks on each side. Porters are not always available, so light, wheeled luggage helps.
Will vegetarians manage in Georgia and Azerbaijan?
Yes. Dinners are included every night, and we ask hotels for vegetarian meals in advance. Georgian food in particular has many bean, cheese and vegetable dishes, and Baku and Tbilisi both have Indian restaurants.
Is travel insurance really needed?
Yes. Georgia has required health and accident insurance for all visitors since January 2026. Complimentary travel insurance is part of this package; we make sure the policy meets Georgia's minimum cover.
