Highlights

Day-by-day itinerary

  1. Arrive Paro · Drive to Thimphu — Fly into Paro, one of the world's most scenic airport approaches, through the mountains. Your Entry Permit is issued at the airport (keep your passport or Voter ID handy). Your guide and driver meet you outside and drive you to Thimphu (about 55 km, 1.5 hours), with a stop at Tachog Lhakhang, where an old iron-chain bridge crosses the Paro Chhu. After check-in and rest, visit the National…
  2. Thimphu sightseeing · Buddha Dordenma · Tashichho Dzong — While your guide collects the Route Permit for Punakha from the immigration office (it opens on working days only), visit Buddha Dordenma, a 51 m bronze Buddha on a hill above the city, and the Motithang Takin Preserve to see Bhutan's national animal. After lunch, visit the Folk Heritage Museum or the Textile Museum, and on Thursday to Sunday the Centenary Farmers' Market. In the late afternoon,…
  3. Thimphu to Punakha via Dochula Pass · Punakha Dzong — After breakfast, drive to Punakha (about 75 km, 2.5–3 hours). The road climbs to the Dochula Pass at 3,100 m, with its 108 memorial chortens and, on clear days from October to February, a view of the eastern Himalaya. Descend into the warmer Punakha valley and walk about 20 minutes through rice fields to Chimi Lhakhang, the temple of the 'Divine Madman', where couples come to pray for children.…
  4. Punakha to Paro · Rinpung Dzong and Kyichu Lhakhang — After breakfast, drive back over the Dochula Pass to Paro (about 125 km, 4–4.5 hours). In the afternoon, visit Rinpung Dzong, the fortress-monastery above the Paro Chhu, and the National Museum in the old watchtower (Ta Dzong) above it, if open. Later, visit Kyichu Lhakhang, a 7th-century temple and one of the oldest in Bhutan. The evening is free to walk around Paro's small main street.
  5. Hike to Taktsang (Tiger's Nest) Monastery — Start early and drive about 20 minutes to the trailhead. The hike up to Tiger's Nest takes 2.5–3 hours for most people, climbing about 500–600 m on a wide dirt path past the cafeteria to a viewpoint opposite the monastery, then down and up around 700 steps to the monastery itself, which clings to a cliff at about 3,100 m. Horses can be hired for the uphill section to the cafeteria at extra cost;…
  6. Departure from Paro — Breakfast and check-out. Transfer to Paro International Airport, about 15 minutes away, at least 2 hours before your flight. Flights to and from Paro operate only in daylight and can be delayed by weather, so avoid tight onward connections in India.

Inclusions

Exclusions

Visa & entry

No visa needed, but Indian citizens need a free Entry Permit and must pay Bhutan's Sustainable Development Fee (SDF) of ₹1,200 per person per night; children aged 6–12 pay half (₹600) and younger children are exempt. Carry an Indian passport valid for at least 6 months, or a Voter ID card issued by the Election Commission. Aadhaar, PAN and driving licences are not accepted. Children without a passport need their birth certificate (and a school ID if they have one). The Entry Permit is issued on arrival at Paro airport or the Phuentsholing border, or can be applied for online in advance. It covers Thimphu and Paro only; the Route Permit for Punakha is issued in Thimphu on working days, and our guide arranges it. Since April 2026, Bhutan requires every tourist, Indians included, to be accompanied by a licensed guide.

Good to know

Questions travellers ask

How much is the SDF for Indians, and is it included?

The SDF is ₹1,200 per person per night for Indian adults, ₹600 for children aged 6–12 and nothing for younger children. It is not included in the package price; for this 5-night trip it is ₹6,000 per adult. We collect it with your booking and pay it when your permit is processed.

Can we travel to Bhutan with just a Voter ID?

Yes. Indian citizens can enter with a passport (valid 6 months) or a Voter ID card. Aadhaar is not accepted. Children without a passport should carry their birth certificate. Please send us copies of everyone's ID at booking.

Is the Tiger's Nest hike suitable for senior citizens?

It is a steep 5–6 hour round trip at altitude. Fit seniors manage it slowly, and a horse can be hired for the first part uphill. Those who prefer not to hike can enjoy the view from the base or the cafeteria, or rest in Paro.

Is vegetarian food available?

Yes. Hotels serve vegetarian Bhutanese, Indian and continental dishes, and Bhutanese food uses a lot of vegetables, cheese and rice. Tell us if you need no-onion-no-garlic or Jain meals.

Are flights included? Can we go by road?

Flights are not included. Drukair and Bhutan Airlines fly to Paro from Delhi, Kolkata, Bagdogra and other Indian cities. You can also fly to Bagdogra and drive to the Phuentsholing border (about 4 hours), but that needs an extra day, which we can add.
