Spiti Valley Expedition

9 Days / 8 Nights. From ₹48,000 per person (twin sharing), plus 5% GST.

A 9-day road journey through the high desert of Spiti, entering through Kinnaur from Shimla and leaving over Kunzum Pass to Manali. Going in from the Shimla side lets your body adjust slowly to the altitude, with nights at Sangla, Kalpa and Nako before two nights in Kaza. You visit Tabo, Dhankar and Key monasteries, the high villages of Kibber, Langza, Hikkim and Komic, and spend a night in a camp near Chandratal lake.

Highlights

Day-by-day itinerary

  1. Chandigarh to Shimla — Our driver picks you up in the morning at Chandigarh airport or railway station and drives you to Shimla via Parwanoo and Solan, about 115 km and 3.5–4 hours. Check in and spend the evening on the Ridge and Mall Road. Pack a small overnight bag for the coming days, since the next four nights are one-night stops.
  2. Shimla to Sangla via Narkanda and the Sutlej valley — Start early for the drive to Sangla, about 225 km and 8–9 hours. The road goes over Narkanda's apple country, then down to Rampur and along the Sutlej river into Kinnaur, past Jeori and the Karcham dam, before turning up the Baspa valley to Sangla (about 2,700 m). Some stretches are cut into the cliff face and are narrow. If time allows, visit the Bering Nag temple and Kamru fort in Sangla.
  3. Chitkul village · Sangla to Kalpa — After breakfast, drive up the Baspa valley to Chitkul, about 25 km and 1 hour, the last inhabited village on this side of the Tibet border, with wooden houses and a small temple. Then drive to Kalpa, about 65 km and 2.5–3 hours, via Reckong Peo. Kalpa faces the Kinnaur Kailash range directly. In the evening, walk to Roghi village or the Kalpa old village temples, and see the Kailash peak turn…
  4. Kalpa to Nako via Khab confluence — After breakfast, drive to Nako, about 105 km and 4–5 hours. The road follows the Sutlej past Pooh and reaches Khab, where the Spiti river meets the Sutlej, then climbs the Kah loops to Nako (about 3,600 m). The landscape changes here from green Kinnaur to the bare, brown hills of the Spiti side. In the afternoon, walk around Nako lake, the old monastery and the village. Rest and drink plenty of…
  5. Nako to Kaza via Tabo and Dhankar — After breakfast, drive to Kaza, about 115 km and 5–6 hours with stops. Visit Tabo Monastery, founded in 996 AD, with mud-walled temples and old murals inside (photography is not allowed in the old halls). Continue to Dhankar, where the old monastery sits on a cliff above the meeting point of the Spiti and Pin rivers. An optional detour to Gue, to see a 500-year-old mummified monk, adds about 2…
  6. Key Monastery · Kibber · Chicham · Langza · Hikkim · Komic — A full day around Kaza. In the morning, visit Key Monastery, about 14 km away, the largest in Spiti, where monks often offer butter tea to visitors. Continue to Kibber and the Chicham bridge over a deep gorge. In the afternoon, drive the high loop to Langza, with its large Buddha statue and fossil beds (do not take fossils away), Hikkim, home to one of the world's highest post offices, where you…
  7. Kaza to Chandratal over Kunzum Pass — After breakfast, drive to Chandratal, about 85 km and 4–5 hours, via Losar and over Kunzum Pass (about 4,551 m), where drivers stop to pay respects at the Kunzum Devi temple. From Batal, a rough side road leads to the camp area, and from the parking it is a walk of about 1.5–2 km on a flat trail to the lake (about 4,300 m). Spend the afternoon by the crescent-shaped lake and return to camp…
  8. Chandratal to Manali via Batal and Atal Tunnel — Leave after breakfast for Manali, about 125 km and 6–7 hours. The stretch from Batal to Gramphu along the Chandra river is one of the roughest roads in Himachal, with loose rock and stream crossings, so progress is slow. From Gramphu, the road improves to Koksar and Sissu, and the Atal Tunnel takes you under the Pir Panjal range to Manali, which needs no Rohtang permit. Check in and enjoy a hot…
  9. Manali to Chandigarh · Departure — After breakfast, drive to Chandigarh via Kullu, Mandi and Bilaspur on the Kiratpur–Manali highway, about 300 km and 7–9 hours depending on traffic. You will be dropped at Chandigarh airport or railway station in the evening; book onward travel after 8 pm. If you prefer, we can drop you at Bhuntar (Kullu) airport instead.

Good to know

Questions travellers ask

Is Spiti suitable for elderly parents or small children?

It is a demanding trip because of the altitude, long drives and basic stays. Fit seniors with a doctor's clearance can manage it. We do not recommend it for children under 6 or anyone with heart or breathing problems.

Do we need a permit for Spiti?

No, Indian citizens do not need a permit. Carry an original photo ID and photocopies for check posts. Foreign nationals in your group need an Inner Line Permit, which we can arrange.

Can we do this trip in October or winter?

Not this circuit. Kunzum Pass and Chandratal usually close by October. In winter, Kaza can be reached only from the Shimla side, and we can plan a separate winter Spiti trip on request.

Are lunch and dinner included?

Only breakfast is included. Most stays in Sangla, Nako, Kaza and Chandratal serve dinner, which you can pay for there or add to the package.

Are flights included?

No. The tour starts and ends in Chandigarh. We can quote flights or trains from Hyderabad or Vijayawada to Chandigarh separately.
