Day-by-day itinerary
Arrive Srinagar · Shikara ride · Houseboat — Our driver meets you at Srinagar airport and takes you to Dal Lake, about 14 km and 30–40 minutes away. After some rest, visit Nishat Bagh and Shalimar Bagh on the Zabarwan hills (entry tickets paid at the gate). In the late afternoon, take a one-hour shikara ride on Dal Lake, which is included. Overnight on a deluxe houseboat.
Day trip to Gulmarg — After breakfast, drive to Gulmarg via Tangmarg, about 50 km and 1.5–2 hours. Walk around the meadow and St Mary's Church. The Gulmarg Gondola is optional: Phase 1 goes to Kongdori and Phase 2 towards Apharwat, weather permitting. Tickets are sold online by the J&K Cable Car Corporation. Pony rides are optional and paid directly. Return to Srinagar for the night at a hotel, and pack a small bag…
Srinagar to Kargil via Sonamarg, Zoji La and Drass — Start early. The drive to Kargil is about 205 km and takes 6–7 hours. The road passes Sonamarg, then climbs Zoji La (about 3,530 m), an unpaved mountain pass where traffic is sometimes held for one-way movement. Stop at Drass, one of the coldest inhabited places in India, and visit the Kargil War Memorial (Operation Vijay), which has no entry fee. Reach Kargil by late afternoon and check in.
Kargil to Leh via Mulbekh, Lamayuru and Magnetic Hill — After breakfast, drive to Leh, about 220 km and 7–8 hours with stops. See the rock-carved Maitreya Buddha at Mulbekh, cross Namik La and Fotu La (about 4,100 m, the highest point on this road), and stop at Lamayuru Monastery and its eroded 'moonland' hills. Further on, see the confluence of the Indus and Zanskar rivers at Nimmu, Gurudwara Pathar Sahib and Magnetic Hill. Reach Leh (3,500 m) by…
Leh at an easy pace · Shanti Stupa · Leh Palace — Keep the morning free to rest and drink plenty of water; Leh is at 3,500 m, and an easy day here before going higher is important. In the afternoon, visit Leh Palace (ASI ticket), the Hall of Fame army museum (small entry fee) and Shanti Stupa for the evening view over Leh. Walk through Leh Main Bazaar if you feel well. Our team will collect your ID copies for the Nubra and Pangong permits today…
Leh to Nubra Valley over Khardung La — After breakfast, drive to Nubra Valley over Khardung La (about 5,359 m), around 125 km and 4–5 hours. Stay at the top for only 15–20 minutes because of the thin air. Descend to Diskit to see the monastery and the 32 m Maitreya Buddha statue, then continue to the sand dunes at Hunder. A double-humped Bactrian camel ride on the dunes is optional and paid directly. Overnight in a camp or hotel in…
Nubra Valley to Pangong Lake via the Shyok river road — Leave after an early breakfast for Pangong Lake by the Shyok river road via Agham and Durbuk, about 160 km and 6–7 hours. The road is rough in places and is sometimes closed after rain, in which case we return via Leh and Chang La, which is longer. Reach Pangong (about 4,250 m) by afternoon and see how the lake changes colour with the light. Nights are cold, even in summer. Overnight in a…
Pangong Lake to Leh over Chang La — Watch the early morning light on the lake, then drive back to Leh over Chang La (about 5,360 m), around 160 km and 5–6 hours. On the way, stop at Thiksey Monastery, which looks like a small Potala Palace on its hill and has a two-storey Maitreya Buddha (small entry fee), and at Shey Palace. Check in at Leh by late afternoon and rest.
Hemis Monastery · Leh market — After breakfast, drive to Hemis Monastery, the largest in Ladakh, about 45 km and 1 hour from Leh. The monastery museum has a separate entry fee. On the way back, stop at Stakna or the Sindhu Ghat on the Indus. The afternoon is free for shopping in Leh Main Bazaar and the Tibetan market for apricots, pashmina, prayer flags and thangka paintings.
Departure from Leh — After breakfast, you will be dropped at Leh airport, about 15 minutes from town. Most flights leave Leh in the morning, because afternoon winds affect flying, so the airport drop may be early. Security checks at Leh airport take time, so arrive 2 hours before your flight.

Good to know
Altitude: Leh is at 3,500 m, and Khardung La, Chang La and Pangong are higher. Rest on arrival in Leh, drink 3–4 litres of water a day, avoid alcohol and smoking, and tell us at once about headache, breathlessness or vomiting. People with heart, lung or blood pressure problems, and pregnant women, should consult a doctor before booking.
Coming by road from Srinagar helps acclimatisation, but Day 4 and Days 6–8 are long road days of 5–8 hours on mountain roads. Carry motion-sickness tablets.
Pack warm layers even in July: Pangong and the passes can be near 0 °C at night. Sunglasses, sunscreen and lip balm are essential because the sun is strong at altitude.
Only postpaid mobile connections work in Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh. Jio, Airtel and BSNL postpaid work in Leh; signal in Nubra and Pangong is limited.
Carry enough cash. ATMs in Leh can run out, and camps in Nubra and Pangong may not accept cards.
Vegetarian food is easy to find in Srinagar, Kargil and Leh. Nubra and Pangong camps serve simple vegetarian dal, rice, roti and sabzi.
Questions travellers ask
Is this trip safe for elderly parents?
It is possible for healthy seniors, but please consult your doctor first. The road route from Srinagar helps the body adjust, and we keep a rest day in Leh. Khardung La, Chang La and Pangong are above 4,200 m, so anyone with heart or breathing problems should not do this trip.
Do we need a permit for Ladakh?
Indian citizens need an online permit with an environment fee for Nubra and Pangong. Our team applies for it using your ID details; the fee is paid at cost. Keep a few copies of your ID with you.
Are flights included?
No. You fly into Srinagar and out of Leh. We can quote both flights from Hyderabad or your city, with and without the package.
Is food included at Nubra and Pangong?
Breakfast is included every day. Dinner at the Nubra and Pangong camps is usually taken there because there are few other options, and can be added to the package as a supplement.
Can we do this trip in winter?
No. Zoji La, Pangong camps and Nubra stays are reliable only from about June to September. For winter, we suggest the Kashmir Winter Wonderland tour instead.
