Day-by-day itinerary
Arrive Manali · Bike handover and briefing — Reach Manali by the overnight Volvo bus from Delhi or Chandigarh, or by flight to Bhuntar (Kullu), about 50 km away. Check in and rest. In the afternoon, collect your motorcycle, check brakes, tyres and lights, and do a short test ride towards Solang or Old Manali. In the evening, there is a route and safety briefing: riding order, fuel stops, water crossings and altitude sickness. Make sure you…
Manali to Jispa over Rohtang or through Atal Tunnel — After breakfast, ride about 140 km to Jispa, 5–6 hours with stops. If the Rohtang permit is available and it is not a Tuesday (when the pass is closed to tourist vehicles), we ride over Rohtang Pass (3,978 m) via Marhi and down to Gramphu and Koksar. Otherwise, we take the Atal Tunnel to Sissu, which needs no Rohtang permit. Continue along the Chandra river to Tandi, where you fill fuel at the…
Jispa to Sarchu over Baralacha La — A shorter riding day of about 85 km and 4–5 hours, which helps your body adjust. Ride past Darcha and Deepak Tal, climb to Zingzingbar and cross Baralacha La (about 4,890 m), where streams cross the road. These are easiest to ride in the morning, before the snowmelt rises. Descend to Sarchu (about 4,290 m) on the Himachal–Ladakh border. Sarchu is high for a night stop, so rest, drink plenty of…
Sarchu to Leh via Gata Loops, More Plains and Tanglang La — The longest ride of the trip: about 250 km and 8–10 hours. Start early. Climb the 21 hairpin bends of the Gata Loops, cross Nakee La and Lachulung La, pass Pang and ride across the high, flat More Plains. Then climb Tanglang La (about 5,328 m), the highest point on the highway, and descend through Rumtse and Upshi into the Indus valley. Refuel at Upshi or Karu and reach Leh (3,500 m) by evening.
Rest day in Leh · Shanti Stupa · bike service — A rest day, both for you and the bikes. Sleep in, drink plenty of water and get any small bike repairs done. In the afternoon, ride or take a taxi to Leh Palace (ASI ticket) and Shanti Stupa for the evening view, and walk through Leh Main Bazaar. Our team will process your Nubra and Pangong permits. Under local union rules, you may switch to a Leh-registered rental bike for the Nubra and Pangong…
Leh to Nubra Valley over Khardung La — Ride about 125 km and 4–5 hours over Khardung La (about 5,359 m). The last stretches on both sides of the pass are often broken and muddy, so ride slowly and stop at the top for only 15–20 minutes. Descend to Diskit Monastery and its 32 m Maitreya Buddha, then ride on to the sand dunes at Hunder. A camel ride is optional and paid directly. Overnight in a camp or hotel in Hunder.
Nubra Valley to Pangong Lake via the Shyok river road — Ride about 160 km and 6–7 hours along the Shyok river via Agham and Durbuk. This road has gravel sections and water crossings, so keep together as a group. If it is closed after rain, we go back via Leh and Chang La. Reach Pangong Lake (about 4,250 m) by afternoon. Fuel is not available at Pangong, so fill up in Diskit or carry spare fuel. Overnight in a lakeside camp.
Pangong Lake to Leh over Chang La — See the lake in the early morning, then ride about 160 km and 5–6 hours to Leh over Chang La (about 5,360 m). Stop at Thiksey Monastery on the way (small entry fee). Reach Leh by afternoon and return the motorcycle after an inspection. Any damage beyond normal wear is charged as per the rental agreement. The evening is free.
Departure from Leh — After breakfast, you will be dropped at Leh airport, about 15 minutes away. Most flights leave Leh in the morning, so the drop may be early. Allow 2 hours for security checks.

Good to know
This trip is only for confident riders. Expect gravel, broken tarmac, water crossings and heavy trucks on narrow roads. Riding experience of at least a few hundred kilometres on hills is strongly recommended.
Altitude: the trip climbs from 2,050 m in Manali to over 5,300 m. Drink 3–4 litres of water a day, do not ride fast on the passes, and tell the group leader at once about a headache, breathlessness or dizziness. Anyone with heart, lung or blood pressure problems should consult a doctor before booking.
Petrol: Tandi, near Keylong, is the last reliable fuel pump until Upshi/Karu, about 365 km away. Carry a spare fuel can for the Manali–Leh stretch and the Pangong loop.
Pack proper riding gear: a full-face helmet, a waterproof riding jacket and trousers, gloves, boots, thermals and a rain cover for luggage. Temperatures on the passes can be near 0 °C even in July.
Mobile signal is almost nil between Keylong and Leh. Only postpaid connections work in Ladakh. Carry cash: there are no ATMs between Keylong and Leh.
Dhabas on the highway and camps at Sarchu, Nubra and Pangong serve simple vegetarian food such as Maggi, dal, rice, roti and sabzi.
Questions travellers ask
Can a pillion come along?
Yes. Many couples do this trip with a pillion. The pillion pays a lower package price because they share the bike. Long days on rough roads are tiring for pillions, so a backup vehicle is worth considering.
Is there a backup vehicle and mechanic?
Not in the base price. For groups, we can add a backup vehicle with a mechanic, spare parts and luggage carriage at extra cost. It is strongly recommended for groups of 4 or more bikes.
Which bike will we get?
Usually a Royal Enfield Himalayan or Classic 350, subject to availability. A security deposit is taken at handover and refunded after inspection in Leh.
Can we do this trip in October?
We do not recommend it. Snow often closes Baralacha La and Tanglang La from October, and camps at Sarchu and Pangong close. Mid-June to mid-September is the safe season.
Are flights included?
No. You travel to Manali and fly out of Leh. We can book the Delhi–Manali Volvo and quote Leh–Delhi–Hyderabad flights separately.
