Malaysia Adventure

7 Days / 6 Nights. From ₹55,000 per person (twin sharing), plus 5% GST and 2% TCS.

A 7-day wildlife and rainforest trip across Sabah, in Malaysian Borneo. From Kota Kinabalu you drive into the hills at Kinabalu Park below Mount Kinabalu, then cross the state to Sepilok to watch orphaned orangutans at their feeding platform. The last two nights are at a riverside lodge on the Kinabatangan River, where boat cruises look for proboscis monkeys, hornbills and, with luck, pygmy elephants. You fly in to Kota Kinabalu and home from Sandakan.

Highlights

Day-by-day itinerary

  1. Arrive Kota Kinabalu · Waterfront evening — Flights from India reach Kota Kinabalu (BKI) via Kuala Lumpur or Singapore. Sabah runs its own immigration check, so you show your passport again on arrival even on a flight from Kuala Lumpur. Our representative meets you and drives you to your hotel, about 20 minutes; you get a welcome drink on arrival, and check-in is usually from 3:00 pm. In the evening, walk along the waterfront for the…
  2. Kota Kinabalu city tour · Optional island trip — After breakfast, a guided half-day city tour of about 3–4 hours: the floating City Mosque on its lagoon (photo stop), Signal Hill Observatory for views over the city and islands, the Sabah Museum, and the handicraft market for pearls and local crafts. The afternoon is free. Optional at extra cost: a half-day speedboat trip to Sapi and Manukan islands in Tunku Abdul Rahman Park, about 15–20…
  3. Kinabalu Park · Kundasang hills — After breakfast, check out and drive into the Crocker Range to Kinabalu Park, about 2 hours and 90 km. At park headquarters, at about 1,560 metres, a guide takes you on an easy rainforest trail of about 1–1.5 hours past giant ferns, pitcher plants and orchids; Mount Kinabalu, at 4,095 metres, is clearest in the early morning. Continue 15 minutes to Kundasang to see the mountain from the…
  4. Drive across Sabah to Sepilok · Afternoon orangutan feeding — Leave early after breakfast for the long drive east to Sepilok, near Sandakan, about 5 hours with stops, through oil palm estates and villages. After check-in at your lodge, visit the Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre for the afternoon feeding, usually around 3:00 pm, watched from a raised boardwalk platform, and the outdoor nursery where young orangutans learn forest skills. These are…
  5. Morning at Sepilok · Transfer to the Kinabatangan River — Return to the Sepilok centre for the 10:00 am feeding, then cross the road to the Bornean Sun Bear Conservation Centre to see the world's smallest bears from viewing platforms. After lunch at your own cost, drive about 2–2.5 hours to the lower Kinabatangan River and cross by boat to your riverside lodge. In the late afternoon, your first river cruise of about 2 hours: proboscis monkeys gather in…
  6. Kinabatangan River cruises · Rainforest walk — An early-morning river cruise starts at about 6:00 am, the best time for birds such as hornbills and kingfishers and, if you are lucky, a herd of Bornean pygmy elephants at the water's edge; sightings are never guaranteed. After breakfast, a short guided walk on the lodge's forest trail. Rest through the hot middle of the day, then take a late-afternoon cruise to look for monkeys, orangutans in…
  7. Transfer to Sandakan · Departure — Breakfast at the lodge, then boat and road transfer to Sandakan Airport (SDK), about 2–2.5 hours. Sandakan has flights to Kuala Lumpur, about 2 hours 45 minutes, where you connect to your flight home; allow at least 3 hours between flights. With a later flight, you may have time for a short stop in Sandakan town.

Good to know

Questions travellers ask

Will we definitely see orangutans?

Very likely, but not guaranteed. Sepilok's orangutans are semi-wild and choose whether to come to the feeding platform; we visit two feedings to improve your chances, and wild orangutans are sometimes seen on the Kinabatangan.

Do we climb Mount Kinabalu?

No. You walk the easy trails at Kinabalu Park headquarters. The summit climb needs a permit, a licensed guide and 2 days, booked months ahead; we can quote it separately.

Is this trip suitable for children and seniors?

Yes for active families and seniors who can manage boat boarding and short forest walks. Day 4 is a long road day of about 5 hours. It is not ideal for children under 6.

Will vegetarian food be available?

Yes, with planning. Kota Kinabalu has Indian restaurants, and the lodges can prepare vegetarian meals if we tell them in advance.

Are flights included?

No. You fly into Kota Kinabalu and out of Sandakan, usually via Kuala Lumpur. We can book these flights for you.
