Day-by-day itinerary
Arrive Kathmandu · Swayambhunath and Durbar Square — Our representative meets you at Tribhuvan International Airport and drives you to your hotel (about 20–30 minutes). After check-in and lunch, visit Swayambhunath, the hilltop stupa also called the Monkey Temple, with views over the city; the car can drive close to the top so you avoid most of the steps. Then visit Kathmandu Durbar Square, with its old palace courtyards, temples and the house of…
Kathmandu to Pokhara · Evening by Phewa Lake — After an early breakfast, drive about 200 km to Pokhara along the Trishuli river (6–7 hours, sometimes longer because of road works). On the way, you can take the cable car up to the Manakamana Temple near Kurintar (optional, ticket paid locally; allow about 1.5 hours). Reach Pokhara by late afternoon and walk along the Lakeside promenade on Phewa Lake in the evening. If you prefer to fly, the…
Sarangkot sunrise · Pokhara sightseeing · Phewa Lake boat ride — Leave at about 5 am for Sarangkot (30–40 minutes' drive and a short walk) to watch the sunrise over the Annapurna range and the fish-tail peak of Machhapuchhre; views are clearest from October to April. After breakfast, visit Bindhyabasini Temple, Davis Falls and the Gupteshwor Mahadev Cave opposite, where steps lead down to a Shiva lingam beside the underground waterfall. In the afternoon, take…
Pokhara to Chitwan · Tharu village and Rapti sunset — After breakfast, drive about 150 km to Sauraha at the edge of Chitwan National Park (about 5 hours). After lunch, take a guided walk through a Tharu village to see the mud-and-thatch homes of the region's indigenous people, then watch the sunset over the Rapti River. In the evening, attend a Tharu cultural dance programme, including the stick dance.
Chitwan · Canoe ride, jeep safari and elephant breeding centre — A full day of activities in and around Chitwan National Park. In the morning, take a dugout canoe down the Rapti River (about 45 minutes), watching for marsh mugger crocodiles, gharials and birds, followed by a short guided jungle walk and a visit to the Elephant Breeding Centre. In the afternoon, a jeep safari of about 3–4 hours goes deeper into the park, where one-horned rhinos are often seen,…
Chitwan to Nagarkot via Bhaktapur — After breakfast, drive back towards the Kathmandu Valley (about 175 km, 6–7 hours). In the afternoon, stop at Bhaktapur Durbar Square, the best-preserved of the valley's three royal cities, to see the 55-Window Palace, the five-storey Nyatapola Temple and the potters' square, and try the local 'juju dhau' (king curd). Continue up to Nagarkot (about 45 minutes) for the night, a hill station at…
Nagarkot sunrise · Pashupatinath and Boudhanath · Departure — Wake early for the sunrise over the Himalaya from Nagarkot; on clear days, from about October to March, the view stretches across the Langtang and Everest ranges. After breakfast, drive to Kathmandu (about 1–1.5 hours) for darshan at Pashupatinath Temple on the Bagmati (only Hindus may enter the main temple courtyard) and a walk around the great stupa of Boudhanath. Both are 10–15 minutes from…
No visa needed. Indian citizens enter Nepal with a valid Indian passport or a Voter ID card issued by the Election Commission of India, and airlines accept either for flights to Kathmandu. Aadhaar and PAN cards are not accepted as travel documents for adults. Under Indian government rules, children under 15 and adults over 65 may also travel with a photo ID showing their age (such as Aadhaar, PAN or a driving licence), and travellers aged 15–18 can use an identity certificate from their school principal. Rules at airports can be strict, so we recommend a passport for every traveller, including children.
Good to know
Indian rupees are widely accepted in Nepal. Notes of ₹100 and below are always fine; ₹200 and ₹500 notes issued after November 2016 are now allowed up to ₹25,000 per person. Card and UPI acceptance is growing but patchy, so carry some cash.
Roads between Kathmandu, Pokhara and Chitwan are narrow and often under repair, so drive times can stretch. Carry motion-sickness tablets and snacks.
At Pashupatinath, only Hindus may enter the main temple courtyard, and leather items are not allowed inside. Remove shoes at temples, and walk clockwise around stupas.
Mountain views are best from October to April. In the monsoon (June–September), the peaks are often hidden by cloud.
Chitwan is hot from April to June (over 35°C) and the park is quieter in the monsoon. Wear neutral colours on safari and use mosquito repellent.
Kathmandu, Pokhara and Sauraha all have Indian and pure-vegetarian restaurants, and hotels serve dal-bhat and North Indian dishes.
Questions travellers ask
Do Indians need a passport for Nepal?
No visa is needed. Adults can travel on either a passport or a Voter ID card. Aadhaar is not accepted for adults. For children, a passport is the safest option, though other ID is allowed for under-15s. Share your documents with us and we will check them before you book flights.
Is vegetarian food easy to find?
Yes, very easy. Nepali dal-bhat is vegetarian, and Kathmandu, Pokhara and Chitwan have many Indian and pure-vegetarian restaurants. Tell us if you need Jain food.
Can we use Indian rupees?
Yes, Indian rupees are accepted almost everywhere. Carry ₹100 notes or newer ₹200/₹500 notes (issued after November 2016, up to ₹25,000 per person). You will get change in Nepali rupees.
Are the drives long?
Two days have 6–7 hour drives (Kathmandu to Pokhara, and Chitwan back to the Kathmandu Valley). You can fly Kathmandu–Pokhara in 25 minutes at extra cost to save a day of driving.
Are flights included?
No. The package starts and ends at Kathmandu airport. We can quote flights from Hyderabad or other cities separately, usually via Delhi or Kolkata.
