Day-by-day itinerary
Arrive Colombo · Drive to Udawalawe — Our chauffeur-guide meets you at Bandaranaike International Airport. The drive south to Udawalawe is about 230 km and takes 4.5–5 hours, mostly on the Southern Expressway, with a lunch stop on the way. Check in at your hotel near the park and rest. For an early arrival (before about 11 am), the Udawalawe safari can be moved to this afternoon.
Udawalawe safari · Elephant Transit Home · Drive to Yala — Set off at about 6 am for a 3–4 hour jeep safari in Udawalawe National Park. The open grassland makes elephants easy to see, often in family groups, along with water buffalo, crocodiles, peacocks and many birds. Return for breakfast, then visit the Elephant Transit Home, where orphaned calves are fed milk at set times (usually including around noon) and later released back to the wild. In the…
Yala National Park morning safari — Leave the hotel at about 5 am to be at the Yala gate when it opens at 6 am, which is the best time to look for leopards. The morning safari lasts about 4–5 hours, through scrub jungle, lagoons and rocky outcrops, and you may also see elephants, sloth bears, spotted deer, crocodiles and wild boar. Leopard sightings are common but never guaranteed. Return to the hotel for a late breakfast and rest…
Yala to Galle · Galle Fort at sunset — After a relaxed breakfast, drive west along the coast to Galle (about 150 km, 3–3.5 hours), passing Mirissa beach and stopping at Koggala to see the stilt fishermen (they usually ask for a small tip for photos). In the late afternoon, walk through Galle Fort, a UNESCO World Heritage Site: the lighthouse, the old Dutch streets and the ramparts, where you can watch the sunset over the sea.
Galle to Negombo · Evening at leisure — Drive north on the expressway to Negombo (about 160 km, 2.5–3 hours), stopping at the Kosgoda sea turtle hatchery on the way if you wish (entry paid locally). Negombo is a beach town about 20 minutes from the airport, so the last evening is relaxed. Walk on the beach, visit the fish market area or shop for tea and spices to take home.
Departure from Colombo airport — Breakfast and check-out. Transfer to Bandaranaike International Airport, about 20–30 minutes away. Plan to reach the airport 3 hours before your international flight.

Visa & entry
Indian passport holders currently get a free 30-day tourist ETA (Electronic Travel Authorisation) for Sri Lanka. Apply online on the official site eta.gov.lk before travel (approval usually comes by email within 1–2 days); a visa on arrival at Colombo airport is also possible, but the queue is longer. Carry a passport valid for at least 6 months from arrival, your return ticket and hotel details. Sri Lanka renews its free-visa scheme from time to time, so we confirm the current rule when you book.
Good to know
Yala's main Blocks 1 and 2 close every year for about a month in the dry season (14 September to 15 October in 2026). Other blocks stay open, but leopard sightings are best in Block 1, so avoid these dates if leopards are your main goal.
Safari jeeps are open-sided and the tracks are bumpy and dusty. Carry a cap, sunscreen, a scarf for dust, binoculars and drinking water. Wear neutral colours (khaki, green, brown).
Children are welcome on safaris, but the early starts (5 am) and 4–5 hours in a jeep suit children aged about 6 and above best. Bumpy rides are not advised for pregnant women or people with back problems.
Wildlife sightings are never guaranteed. Elephants are almost certain at Udawalawe; leopards are seen on many, but not all, Yala safaris.
The currency is the Sri Lankan rupee (LKR). Indian rupees are not accepted. Carry LKR cash for park tickets, which are paid at the gate, and for tips.
The south is hot (30–33°C by day). Drink plenty of water, and rest in the afternoon between safaris.
Questions travellers ask
Will we definitely see a leopard?
No one can guarantee it, but Yala has one of the highest leopard densities in the world and the early-morning safari gives you the best chance. Adding the optional afternoon safari improves your chances further.
Are the national park tickets included?
The jeep safaris are included. Park entry tickets are paid at the gate, because the rates for foreign visitors change and are charged per person. We will tell you the current amount before you travel.
Is this trip suitable for elderly parents?
Yes, if they are comfortable with early starts and a bumpy jeep ride for 3–5 hours. They can skip the second safari and rest at the hotel. There is no trekking on this trip.
Is vegetarian food available near the parks?
Yes. Safari hotels serve buffets with vegetarian curries, rice, dal and vegetables. Tell us about Jain or no-onion-no-garlic needs when booking so we can inform the hotels.
Do Indians need a visa for Sri Lanka?
Indians currently get a free 30-day tourist ETA. Apply online at eta.gov.lk before you fly; we can help you fill it in.
