Day-by-day itinerary
Arrive Coimbatore · drive up to Ooty — Our driver meets you at Coimbatore airport or railway station for the drive to Ooty (about 90 km, 3–3.5 hours, including the hairpin bends of the Nilgiri ghat road via Mettupalayam). After check-in and rest, take an evening walk around the Charing Cross area and the town's chocolate shops. Ooty sits at about 2,240 m, so it is cold in the evenings for most of the year.
Ooty sightseeing · Botanical Garden, Doddabetta and Pykara — After breakfast, visit the Government Botanical Garden, laid out in 1848, and the Rose Garden (entry paid locally). Drive up to Doddabetta Peak, the highest point in the Nilgiris at about 2,637 m, and stop at a tea factory and museum on the way back. In the afternoon, continue to Pykara (about 20 km) for the waterfalls and an optional boat ride on Pykara Lake. Return to Ooty in the evening;…
Coonoor day trip · optional toy train — Spend the day in Coonoor, about 19 km below Ooty. If you have booked seats, you can ride the Nilgiri Mountain Railway toy train from Ooty to Coonoor (about 1 hour 15 minutes) while the car meets you at Coonoor station; the line is part of the UNESCO-listed Mountain Railways of India, and seats sell out early. In Coonoor, visit Sim's Park, Lamb's Rock and Dolphin's Nose for views over the tea…
Ooty to Kodaikanal · long scenic drive — After an early breakfast, drive from Ooty to Kodaikanal (about 250 km, 6.5–7.5 hours), going down the Nilgiris and across the plains via Pollachi and Palani before climbing the Palani Hills. This is the longest drive of the trip, so we stop for lunch and breaks along the way. If time allows, you can stop at Palani for a quick visit to the Murugan temple on the hill (the rope car or winch is…
Kodaikanal sightseeing · lake, Coaker's Walk and Pillar Rocks — Start with Coaker's Walk, a paved path along the hillside with views down to the plains (small entry fee), then drive out to the Pine Forest, Guna Caves viewpoint (the caves themselves are fenced off) and Pillar Rocks, three granite columns rising from the valley. After lunch, visit Bryant Park and spend the late afternoon at Kodai Lake, where you can go boating or cycle around the 5 km lakeside…
Kodaikanal to Madurai · departure — After breakfast, drive down to Madurai (about 120 km, 3.5–4 hours). If your flight or train is in the evening, you can visit the Meenakshi Amman Temple first; mobile phones are usually not allowed inside, dress should be traditional, and the temple usually closes for a few hours in the afternoon, so check timings. We then drop you at Madurai airport or railway station.

Good to know
Ooty and Kodaikanal are cold at night, especially November–February (Ooty can drop to 5 °C or lower). Pack woollens.
Vehicles entering Ooty and Kodaikanal currently need an e-pass. We arrange it for our car; it does not need anything from you.
Toy train seats (Mettupalayam–Ooty and Ooty–Coonoor) open on IRCTC well in advance and sell out quickly in season. Tell us early if you want it.
Day 4 is a long drive with many bends. Carry motion-sickness tablets if anyone needs them.
April–June and long weekends are peak season, with traffic jams in both towns and higher hotel rates.
Meenakshi temple usually does not allow mobile phones or cameras inside; there are paid lockers outside.
Questions travellers ask
Why does the trip start in Coimbatore and end in Madurai?
Coimbatore is the nearest airport to Ooty and Madurai is the nearest to Kodaikanal. Doing it one-way avoids a long return drive and lets you see Meenakshi temple on the last day.
Is the toy train included?
No. Seats are booked separately on IRCTC and sell out early. We plan Day 3 so you can take the Ooty–Coonoor stretch if you have tickets.
Is this good for senior citizens?
Yes. Most sightseeing is by car with short walks. The Ooty–Kodaikanal day is long, so we plan rest stops.
Can we reverse the route?
Yes. You can arrive in Madurai and leave from Coimbatore; the price is the same.
Does the price include flights?
No. We can quote flights to Coimbatore and back from Madurai, or trains, from Vijayawada or Hyderabad separately.
