Suryanar Kovil (Surya) · Kanjanur (Shukra) · Alangudi (Guru) — Start after breakfast with Suryanar Kovil (about 15 km), the temple for Surya where shrines for all nine grahas stand around the Sun; by tradition, devotees begin the Navagraha circuit here. Then visit Kanjanur (3 km away) for Shukra (Venus). After a midday rest at the hotel, drive about 17 km to Alangudi for Guru (Jupiter), worshipped here as Apatsahayeswarar. Return to Kumbakonam by evening.

Good to know
Most of these temples usually open around 6 am, close from about 12:30 pm to 4 pm, and reopen until about 8:30 pm. We plan the order around these hours; check timings on festival days.
Parihara pujas and archanas are booked at each temple counter. Priests may suggest extra pujas; agree on the fee before it starts.
Wear traditional clothing. Some temples ask men to remove shirts before the inner shrine; carry a dhoti or towel.
At Thirunallar, Saturdays and Sani Peyarchi days bring very large crowds. A weekday visit is much easier for elders.
Kumbakonam's Mahamaham festival is held once every 12 years (next expected in 2028), when the town is extremely crowded.
Questions travellers ask
Is there a fixed order for the Navagraha temples?
Many devotees start with Suryanar Kovil and finish with Ketu or Shani, but the order varies by tradition. Our plan groups nearby temples to keep the drives short; tell us if your family priest has advised a particular order.
Can we finish in two days?
It is possible with long days and little time at each temple. We recommend this plan, which also includes Thanjavur and Darasuram.
Are pujas included?
No. Archanas, parihara pujas and abhishekams are paid at each temple. We can share typical costs before you travel.
Why stay in Kumbakonam for all three nights?
All nine temples are within about 60 km of Kumbakonam, so staying in one hotel saves packing and unpacking, which helps elders.
Can we start from Chennai instead?
Yes. Chennai to Kumbakonam is about 280 km (5.5–6 hours). We can quote a Chennai start with an extra day.
