Day-by-day itinerary
Haridwar to Joshimath via Devprayag — Our driver meets you at Haridwar railway station at about 6 am (or Dehradun airport by arrangement). Make sure your Uttarakhand pilgrim registration for Hemkund Sahib is done before you travel. Drive about 280 km up the Alaknanda valley to Joshimath via Rishikesh, Devprayag, Rudraprayag and Karnaprayag (10–11 hours with breaks), stopping at the Devprayag confluence. Lunch is on the way at your…
Govindghat and Pulna · Trek to Ghangaria — After an early breakfast, drive about 22 km to Govindghat (1 hour), then take a local shared vehicle about 4 km to Pulna, where the trek starts. Walk about 9–10 km up a stone path along the Lakshman Ganga to Ghangaria (5–7 hours, climbing about 1,000 m). Ponies and porters can be hired at Pulna, and a helicopter runs from Govindghat to Ghangaria in good weather; all are paid locally. Pack only a…
Valley of Flowers National Park — Start by 7 am and walk about 3 km from Ghangaria to the forest check post, where you pay the entry fee (about ₹200 per Indian visitor) and show your ID. Continue into the valley, walking as far as you like on the main trail (most people go 3–5 km in); in July and August the meadows are covered with flowers such as blue poppies, cobra lilies and potentillas. Overnight stays are not allowed inside…
Hemkund Sahib and the glacial lake — Leave Ghangaria by 5–6 am for the steep 6 km climb to Hemkund Sahib (4–6 hours up, about 1,100 m of ascent to roughly 4,150 m). The gurudwara stands beside a glacial lake ringed by seven peaks, and the small Lakshman temple is next to it. Langar is served at the gurudwara. Visitors must start down by about 2 pm because weather turns quickly at this height; the walk back takes 2.5–4 hours. Ponies…
Trek down to Pulna · Drive to Joshimath — After breakfast, walk back down about 9–10 km to Pulna (4–5 hours), take the shared vehicle to Govindghat and drive about 22 km to Joshimath. The afternoon is free to rest; if you have energy, visit the Narsingh temple, the winter seat of Lord Badrinath.
Joshimath to Rishikesh · Ganga Aarti — Leave early after breakfast and drive about 255 km back down the Alaknanda valley to Rishikesh (9–10 hours with breaks). Lunch is on the way at your own cost. If you arrive in time, attend the evening Ganga Aarti at Parmarth Niketan or Triveni Ghat.
Rishikesh to Haridwar · Departure — After breakfast, check out and drive about 25 km to Haridwar railway station (45–60 minutes) or about 20 km to Dehradun airport. If your train or flight is later in the day, you can stop at Har Ki Pauri in Haridwar on the way.

Good to know
Register every traveller for Hemkund Sahib on the Uttarakhand government portal (registrationandtouristcare.uk.gov.in) or the Tourist Care Uttarakhand app before you travel, and carry the QR-coded letter. Registration is free.
Fitness matters: you walk about 10 km up to Ghangaria, 6–10 km in the valley and 12 km up and down to Hemkund. Walk or climb stairs daily for a month before the trip. People with heart, blood pressure or breathing problems should consult a doctor first.
July–August is monsoon. Trails are wet, landslides can block the road for hours, and helicopter flights are often cancelled. Keep a buffer day before your return train or flight if you can.
Pack a good rain jacket and pack cover, trekking shoes with grip, warm layers (nights are 5–10°C), a torch, sunscreen and basic medicines. Plastic bags are discouraged in the park.
Ghangaria has only basic guesthouses and simple vegetarian dhabas. There is no ATM, and mobile signal is weak (BSNL and Jio work best), so carry enough cash from Joshimath.
Hemkund Sahib usually closes around 10 October and the Valley of Flowers around 31 October. September departures should be planned before Hemkund closes.
Questions travellers ask
How difficult is the trek?
Moderate. The paths are well made but climb steadily. Pulna to Ghangaria takes 5–7 hours and Hemkund is a steep 6 km climb. A regular walker with reasonable fitness can do it; ponies are available on most stretches if you get tired.
When will we see the most flowers?
From mid-July to mid-August, at the height of the monsoon. June has fewer flowers and some snow patches; September has fewer flowers but clearer skies.
Can senior citizens or children go?
Healthy seniors often go with a pony for the climbs, but please get a medical check-up first. Children aged about 8 and above who walk regularly usually manage. Hemkund is at about 4,150 m, so anyone with heart or lung problems should take medical advice.
Can we visit Badrinath on this trip?
Badrinath is about 25 km from Govindghat. It can be added as a half-day trip on Day 5 or with an extra day at extra cost, while the temple is open (usually until November).
Is food available on the trek?
Yes. Simple vegetarian dhabas are spread along the Pulna–Ghangaria trail and in Ghangaria, and langar is served at Hemkund Sahib. Carry dry fruits and water for the valley, where there are no shops.
